My Story

I help real estate investors and contractors solve problems, whether the need is for advice about day-to-day legal issues, structuring their next real estate deal, reviewing the covenants or bylaws for a community or resolving a dispute.

Even as a teenager, Rick opened every newspaper to the real estate section first.

He’s still passionate about the industry today because he recognizes that real estate is at the core for most people and for every city. For many, a home is their largest and most significant investment. For others, real estate is one of the best ways to gain wealth through investing. Commercial developers help shape the environment we live in by attracting new businesses that strengthen local communities. Contractors renovate old, dated properties, restoring their value and improving neighborhoods.

Rick’s focus on and commitment to real estate makes him the attorney of choice for mid-sized investors, contractors and commercial developers. Having personally invested in real estate and as a regular attendee at Kansas City-area real estate investor meetings and events, Rick is familiar with the unique challenges industry professionals face. This understanding allows him to provide his clients the best and most practical solutions to their issues, taking both legal and non-legal factors into consideration.

“Often, the best solutions are not the most expensive or legally intensive options,” Rick said. “By recognizing what could be, rather than just what needs to be done, I deliver creative solutions that create win-wins so all parties can move on with business.”

Besides being acknowledged by clients for his in-depth real estate experience, Rick has been recognized by the legal industry at a far earlier stage in his career than is typical. In 2019, he was named an associate fellow in the Construction Lawyers Society of America. In 2017, he was named a fellow in the American Bar Foundation and also received Martindale-Hubbell’s AV rating, the highest granted under the 150-year-old rating system, which is considered the gold standard in attorney rankings.

Because Martindale-Hubbell’s assessments are based on other attorneys’ reviews – including those at the partner and managing partner levels across the country –Rick’s rating underscores the confidence clients place in him.

“Earning the respect of peers ensures a more productive working relationship with opposing attorneys,” Rick said. “For clients, this means legal solutions come more quickly and easily. The Martindale-Hubbell rating demonstrates that, based on the evaluation of other attorneys who know how to determine the effectiveness of legal work, clients can count on me to provide sound counsel and do what’s right for them.”

Career Achievements

Recovered a significant portion of the more than $300,000 owed to my client, a subcontractor, after a large bio-ethanol project in Kansas shut down and the general contractor filed for bankruptcy.

Helped a family-run general contracting business that was facing a lawsuit with more than $250,000 at stake. After a two-week arbitration, my client was awarded all of its damages, plus attorney fees, costs and interest on the outstanding balance.

Helped a larger supplier and retailer review the legal and licensing requirements of expanding into new services and new markets. Drafted customer agreements and disclosures and ensured regulatory compliance in 15 states and numerous cities and towns.

Obtained injunctive relief and an award of attorney fees against a homeowner who had driven down neighboring homes’ property values by digging in his front yard in violation of the homeowners’ association covenants.

Drafted paperwork, reviewed contracts and otherwise assisted with the sale of numerous commercial and residential properties, as well as with residential and commercial leasing issues.

Assisted condo and homeowners’ associations in making amendments to their communities’ declarations and bylaws to address issues related to rental properties, vacation rentals by owners, solar panels and other emerging issues these communities face.
